Why shop local? We asked small-business owners to tell Ontarians themselvess

As Ontarians are busy completing their holiday shopping, small-business owners across the province are asking residents to consider buying from local businesses and supporting their own communities amid COVID-19.

Kay Matthews, executive director of the Ontario BIA Association (OBIAA), said this has been an especially challenging time for small businesses, and customers should remember to approach them with respect, empathy and understanding for the COVID-19 restrictions and protocols in place — especially for those residing in the province’s pandemic hot spots.

“(Customers) can reach out, they can phone them, they could check online, make appointments — there are great opportunities,” she said. “If we don’t buy local, we’re going to be saying goodbye to local.”

Matthews added that these businesses are instrumental in hiring local people, supporting local initiatives, offering personalized experiences and providing unique flavour to their respective communities and customers.

“We are your community. We’re the place where you go for your morning coffee and to meet friends and we want to be there when this is over,” she said. “We want to welcome you back.”
