Summer of High School

Technically summer starts on Victoria Day here in Canada... and today, Memorial Day in the US.

TikTok ( or someone told me) has declared this Summer of 2025 the "Summer of High School!". We always have a summer trend, and last year it was Brat (“characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude”). I had to ask a few people what that meant. I thought it was Brat as in the "Brat Pack"! 😊

The Summer of Highschool is about nostalgia and that's what I'm going to focus on here. 

I don't have memories of 90s fashions like tankinis. Mine are rather in the tube top era. I was in a store over the weekend and, lo and behold, there they were. It took me back to coming home and seeing my mom in the backyard wearing one. She looked great! Even back then, I wasn’t a fan... and guess what? I’m still not. 😄

The Summer Throwbacks We’ll Never Forget

The Hits

• Slip ’n Slides – Backyard thrills, hose-drenched hair, and at least one dramatic wipeout.

• Friendship Bracelets – Bonus points if you had a bead kit and alphabet letters.

• Freezies/Lolas – The unofficial currency of summer.

• Disposable Cameras – You never knew what you captured until September.

• Camping or beaching with a Boom Box ( or Ghetto Blaster) – Powered by six giant D batteries and pure joy.

• Water guns were our version of air conditioning ( I did not have)... armed, drenched, and wildly off-target half the time.
• Koosh Balls – Just plain old fun!
• Playing Hide And Seek – Until the street lights came on. It was just so much fun!
• Dickie Dee Ice Cream – Just the best Summer Job any kid could have!
• Playing Outside – Playing in the Creek and getting wet and muddy! That was fun!

❌ The Misses 

• Tube Tops – They slipped, they sagged, and they offered zero support... physically or emotionally.

• Sun-In Hair Lightener – For those who wanted to go blonde but ended up with a shade best described as “dusty orange.” I tried it once and I became an instant blonde ( So the bottle says)... Not!

• Plastic Tattoo Chokers – Fashion or circulation hazard? Jury’s still out.

• Sticky Body Glitter – Sparkly? Yes...Comfortable? Never.

• Platform Flip-Flops – If you were short, you needed to be tall. Just saying! ;)

🤷♀️ The “What Were We Thinking?”

• Matching terry cloth sets

• Blasting 'Mambo No. 5' like it was a personality ( I still like this song)

• Calling into the radio station to dedicate a summer song (from your landline, of course)
