The first organized hockey game was played at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal on March 3, 1875. A couple of years later, in 1877, the first official rules of ice hockey were published in the Montreal Gazette.

Where hockey was actually invented is still up for debate. Many Canadian towns claim it as their own, but there’s also evidence that early stick-and-ball games resembling hockey were played across the pond in England, especially versions of bandy and shinny that helped shape the sport.

The National Hockey League was formed in 1917 with four teams: the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Arenas. Since those early days, the league has expanded many times and now includes 32 teams across Canada and the United States, making it one of the largest and most beloved sports leagues in the world.
