“The darkest night enfolds us here
The deepest darkness of the year…” — Rebekah Myers
The shortest day, the longest night... the Winter Solstice... 2025 is here! While the chill in the air (especially here in Toronto!) might have us reaching for an extra layer, this celestial event is a perfect excuse to embrace coziness, find the light in the darkness, and, of course, share a few laughs. Mark your calendars for December 21, 2025, as we officially welcome winter in Canada.
What is the Winter Solstice, Anyway?
Beyond being a date on the calendar, the solstice is a beautiful astronomical turning point. It’s the moment the North Pole is tilted farthest from the sun, granting us minimal daylight and maximum stargazing potential. From this day forward, the days slowly begin to lengthen again, a natural promise of the spring to come. Cultures around the world have celebrated this return of the light for centuries, and we think that’s a tradition worth keeping!
Our Favourite Ways to Celebrate in Canada:
-
Light It Up: String up some fairy lights and just lean into the cozy glow. Bringing a little light into your home is the perfect, simple way to honour the solstice spirit.
-
Get Cozy, Canadian-Style: This is non-negotiable. It’s the perfect time to pull on your favourite quirky socks, enjoy a cuppa, and just curl up on the couch and watch a great show (I personally can't wait for CBC's North of North season 2 which is set in Iqaluit!). It’s basically mandatory hibernation.
-
Reflect and Reset: The quiet darkness of the solstice is ideal for a little introspection. Think about the year past and set intentions for the new one dawning with the returning sun.
-
Share Laughter: The best way to combat the winter blues? A good dose of humour. Spread the joy!
-
Embrace the Outdoors: Get out there and embrace winter! A brisk walk in the crisp air, skating at a local rink or, my favourite past time in February, go to Ottawa for Winterlude and skate the canal (after enjoy a Beavertail), or just watching the snow fall can be totally magical and reset your mood.
