It is situated in a quirky village of around 800 people on Trinity Bay.
In August 2019, Jimmy Kimmel jokingly launched a mock campaign to become the “honorary mayor” there, but only if he actually visited. He never made the trip, but his sidekick Guillermo did. He took part in the local “screech-in” ceremony... kissing a cod and downing a shot of Newfoundland Screech... becoming an honorary Newfoundlander in the process.
Canada has a hilarious side

Jimmy Kimmel had a huge Hollywood-style sign put up on a nearby hill, and declared it the sister city of Hollywood. “Kimmel for Mayor” banners popped up all over town. The publicity brought a wave of tourists eager to snap a photo with the sign.
Even though he never officially ruled, Kimmel kept Dildo in the spotlight on his show. Meg Ryan even mentioned on Jimmy Kimmel Live!Carrie Fisher had been to Dildo... but he himself still hadn’t made the trek.
More recently, some locals have started to grumble. In 2024 and again in 2025, talk of replacing Kimmel with Canadian comedian Gerry Dee started swirling... some even signed a petition... saying it might be time for a mayor who actually shows
