Cherry Blossom: Bye Bye Now!

Thanks for the sweetness!

Hershey Canada sending Cherry Blossom to the chocolate graveyard

Love it or hate it, Cherry Blossom is on its way out. The Canadian-made chocolate treat... is instantly recognizable in its bright yellow packaging... is being discontinued, leaving some fans nostalgic and others, well… unbothered.

Hershey Canada confirmed the news, saying the syrupy maraschino cherry-filled chocolate with bits of coconut and peanut will disappear from shelves by early 2025.

"After being a cherished treat for Canadians for many years, Hershey Canada confirms that Cherry Blossom will be discontinued across the country," the company told CBC News.

For some, it’s the end of an era. The candy has been around for generations, first made in 1905 at Montreal’s Lowney Factory before Hershey Canada took over in the ‘80s. Its yellow box has been a fixture in stores for decades.

But let’s be honest—not everyone will miss it.

A Love-Hate Relationship

I for one, loved it as a kid.

According to Jordan Lebel, a professor of food marketing at Concordia University, Cherry Blossom has always been a polarizing treat, especially for those who grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

"The chocolate industry is tough," he explained. "Consumers want treats that surprise them and take them somewhere new. I’m not sure Cherry Blossom ever found a way to reinvent itself."

Retailers, he added, probably weren’t eager to give prime shelf space to a candy that hasn’t changed in decades. Still, the cherry-and-chocolate combo is pretty rare, so who knows? Maybe another company will take a crack at it.

For now, Cherry Blossom lovers might want to stock up while they still can. And for the haters? Well, they won’t have to pretend to like them anymore.

Rest in Peace Cherry Blossom!
