On August 17th, 2002, several notable events occurred:

1. Canada: The Prime Minister of Canada was Jean Chrétien.

2. Canada: Canadian citizens and organizations were involved in relief for the          flooding in Europe. 

3. USAThe President of the United States was George W. Bush.

4. USA: The play, "Take Me Out" by Richard Greenberg opened up on broadway.      This play explores the scenario of a Major League Baseball player coming out        publicly during his career.

5. Cultural and Sports Events: Various cultural and sports events took place worldwide, including the Women's Hockey World Cup, which was held in Perth, Australia, during this time.

6. USA: Mae West (1893) was born on this day: Actress, singer, and comedian, famous for her witty and often provocative one-liners. Also, Belinda Carlisle (1958) was born on August, 17th. She is the lead vocalist for the Go-Go's, the most sucessful all female rock band. 

7. USA: The "Florida Man" meme began gaining traction online, highlighting the abundance of strange news stories coming out of Florida.

8. TV: Friends, a comedy and ER, a drama were the popular shows on the tube.

9. MusicThe top music in 2002 featured diverse array of artists and genres.From The White Stripes to Norah Jones and Avril Lavigne. With the pop hits of Nelly and Ashanti and rap talents of Eminem, 50 Cent, and Ludacris, there was something for everyone on the charts. 

10. Lots of people got married! But hey, with marriage as long-lasting and wonderfulmaybe the funniest event was the start of one's journey together! 😄
