Our Roots
Before Danna Bananas existed, I was already offbeat and hunting for gifts that were too. I scoured gift shops across Toronto and Ontario, and stores across Canada on road trips through places like Ottawa, always looking for something that wasn't just the usual safe gift.
During a trip to visit my sister in BC, I found a tiny novelty and funny gift shop on Commercial Drive in Vancouver, run by a woman who looked like she'd seen it all and sold most of it too. Why didn't we have anything like this back home?
In 2006, that question turned into Danna Bananas, a business I built and still run with my own very specific sense of funny.
I grew up in Scarborough, moved to Pickering, and still source new finds twice a year at the Toronto Gift + Home Market, Canada's national gift trade show. There were 300 inflatable ottomans along the way. They are missed.
In 2016, Danna Bananas was nominated for Best Online Retailer in NOW Toronto's Readers' Choice Awards.
Twenty years later, it's still all for the inner child in all of us.
