Tonight’s dessert…as it’s National Banana Split Day!
Originally served in drug stores, soda fountains and ice cream parlors, the banana split is traditionally served in a long dish called a boat. To make a banana split, cut the banana lengthwise and place it in the dish. Then add scoops of vanilla ice cream and drizzle some chocolate on top. Add some raspberries or strawberries between the slices of banana. Next, sprinkle with crushed nuts and garnish with whipped cream and maraschino cherries. The first banana split is attributed to a 23 year old pharmacist apprentice, David Stickler while working at Tassel’s Pharmacy in Latrobe Pennsylvania threw one together and charged a whopping 10 cents (twice the cost of a sundae at the time). Grab your ice cream and go B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
