10 Fun Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day from Home

Celebrating Mom while in isolation doesn’t mean that Mother’s Day 2020 is cancelled. In fact, spending it at home with your family can be a Mother’s Day celebration she will cherish forever. On May 10, there are many fun things to do, to make Mom’s day the best she’s ever had.

Here’s how to celebrate Mother’s Day at home this year…

1. Make her Breakfast in Bed
Bread and syrup are a beautiful thing so let Mom start her morning off right with one of these 10 easy, homemade (maybe even decadent) French toast recipes. How about ‘Banana‘ French Toast:

French Toast

Slices of Vegan Banana French Toast piled high and topped with sliced bananas and syrup

  • 1 just ripe banana (~1/2 cup mashed)
  • 1 1/4 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 Tbsp flaxseed meal
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 4-5 slices hearty wheat bread (Sturdy rustic breads do best here. If using sandwich-style bread, soak it for less time)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp almond meal (optional // for texture)

For Topping (optional)

Instructions

  • Mash banana in a large shallow bowl.
  • Add almond milk, flaxseed, cinnamon and stir. If your batter appears extremely gloppy, add more almond milk to thin it out. It should be pourable. (Vanilla is optional.)
  • Let batter rest for 5 minutes while you preheat your griddle or skillet to medium heat.
  • Once your surface is hot, coat generously with vegan butter or coconut oil (I used Earth Balance because I like the flavor).
  • Dip your slices of bread into the batter and let it rest for 5-10 seconds on each side, using your fingers to make sure it’s fully submerged. Transfer immediately to griddle. An optional step is to sprinkle the freshly-dipped sides with a little almond meal for added texture.
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side or until evenly golden brown. Flip carefully using a sturdy spatula as the banana mixture can be a bit sticky if you’re not gentle. If your french toast appears to be browning too quickly or burning, turn down your griddle.
  • Serve immediately with desired toppings. I think peanut butter and maple syrup are all you need here.

2. Host a Tea Party for Mom
Serve traditional English tea complete with finger sandwiches, tea cookies, scones with jams, and cakes and pastries. A tea party is one of those occasions where the table setting really does matter. Dress up and break out the fancy linens and pretty china. Or, make it casual ‘do’ by having it in the living room fort you just built. If the weather is nice, take the tea party to your backyard. Invite all your favourite dolls, bears and stuffies.

3. Make Your Own Brunch
Celebrate Mother’s Day with a delicious Springtime-inspired brunch menu! Lay out an impressive spread on Mom’s special day with these recipes for sticky lemon rolls, clementine upside down cakes, pillowy soft puff pastry quiche, strawberry shortcake doughnuts, and more.

4. Give her a Bouquet of Flowers
Ask Dad to pick up potted flowers at a Garden Centre, one of the businesses allowed to re-open. You can also arrange with dad to have flowers delivered or pick a few from your backyard garden. There’s also a beautiful paper bouquet you can make. Find this project in our Mother’s Day Gifts you can make round-up.

5. Spa Day for Mom
Spend the day pampering mom. Give mom a mani pedi, cool tired eyes with cucumber slices, let her enjoy a long hot bubble bath with her favourite book, or make facial masks with ingredients you have at home. You can get some ideas from Elle Magazine.

6. Make Cupcakes for Mom
What better way to say ‘Thanks Mom’ than with some flowers … flowers that just happen to double as cupcakes! Here are 10 beautiful cupcakes to celebrate Mom.

Take on Household Projects for Mom
Ask mom for a list of all the house projects kids can help with. Then, write them out on pieces of paper. Give mom a ‘Chores Jar’ with all the little house projects that need to get done, as a gift. Surprise mom even more by coming up with your own (i.e. helping with laundry, folding clothes, doing dishes, organizing the pantry, making dinner, helping with the pets, picking the weeds from the garden, etc.) Mom can reach in the jar to pick a project the kids can help with, once a week.

8. Make a Gift for Mom
With a little guidance from an adult, and their natural creativity, kids can make these heartfelt gifts Mom will instantly cherish. These homemade gifts will make Mom feel very special, like this lemon body scrub.

9. Go for a Walk
Escape the house with a walk in the park. Some select local or conservation parks may be open. Remember the physical distancing rules and enjoy the great outdoors in a safe way. Avoid crowded places, do not use park amenities or playgrounds and do not make plans to meet up with friends when outdoors. Keep two metres (or six feet) from others and stay only with your family.

10. Go for a Bike Ride
Some bike paths may be opened, too. Try a leisurely ride through your favourite one, or through your neighbourhood, to give mom a family outing she’ll treasure forever! Again, remember the physical distancing rules, and keep your family safe.
